South Tyrol's south is a popular holiday region that extends around the Dolomites, the South Tyrolean Wine Road, Lake Kaltern, and Bolzano. Here, guests can expect holiday experiences for all senses: one encounters clear bathing lakes, blooming orchards, and golden vineyards and can look forward to a diverse stay.
Wine Experiences
Anyone spending their holiday in South Tyrol's south should definitely plan a trip along the Wine Road. The South Tyrolean Wine Road is one of the oldest Italian wine routes and runs from Nals through Bolzano, the Überetsch and Unterland, all the way to Salurn. In 2009, the Wine Road was awarded as one of the most beautiful Italian wine routes during the "Roma Wine Festival," where the perfect mixture of culture, landscape, wine, and tourism was particularly recognized. The South Tyrolean Wine Road weeks, which always take place between the end of April and the beginning of June, are especially well-known, where visitors can embark on an interesting journey of discovery around wine.
Diverse Hiking
Hiking enthusiasts will find a variety of hiking trails of different difficulty levels in South Tyrol's south. One can take a leisurely stroll around Lake Kaltern or the Montiggler Lakes, while tours to the peaks of the Dolomites or the Sarntal Alps are somewhat more challenging. Additionally, vacationers can quickly reach Jenesien from Bolzano or from Vilpan to Mölten via cable car. The world-famous Bletterbach Gorge, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is also absolutely worth seeing.
Enjoying Skiing Fun
In the cold season, various ski resorts in the holiday region impress with spectacular natural scenery and well-prepared slopes. The family ski area Reinswald presents itself as wild and snow-sure, where one can also undertake ski tours or enjoy an idyllic horse-drawn sleigh ride. The Rittner Horn is also an ideal destination for families, but advanced winter sports enthusiasts will feel very comfortable here as well, as it offers the opportunity to ski down a seven-kilometer run. Alternatively, one can visit the Jochgrimm ski area, where one can find the best conditions until April.
Cultural Highlights
For culture enthusiasts, South Tyrol's south also has much to offer. For example, one can visit the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum in Bolzano, where Ötzi – the man from the ice – is also kept. The old town of Bolzano is highly recommended, with its arcades housing numerous traditional houses with impressive facades and elegant boutiques and shops. Not far from Bolzano lies Runkelstein Castle, which houses the most extensive cycle of secular medieval frescoes.
