In the South Tyrolean Dolomites lies the popular Alpe di Siusi, which is considered the largest high alpine meadow in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009.
Eldorado for Nature Lovers
Around the Sciliar and the Alpe di Siusi, active vacationers can fully enjoy themselves. Here, countless sports opportunities are available, such as hiking, climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, paragliding, or swimming. The Alpe di Siusi is located in the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park and, together with the imposing towers of Euringer and Santner, as well as the Sciliar, forms an extremely well-known photo motif. In the warm season, hikers on the Alpe di Siusi have access to a network of trails of around 300 kilometers, including, for example, a tour on the Friedrich-August Trail, which leads to the Stone City at Sellajoch, or a hike on the Hans and Paula Steger Trail, a cultural path that is very easy to hike. In winter, athletes can also use numerous ski slopes on the Alpe di Siusi, which are relatively wide and therefore particularly suitable for children. In addition, the Alpe di Siusi is part of the lift pass network "Dolomiti Super Ski," providing guests with direct access to the ski areas of Val Gardena and Alta Badia.
Attractions in the Sciliar Area
The main towns in the Sciliar area include Völs, Siusi allo Sciliar, and Castelrotto, where not only opportunities for sports activities are available but also numerous sights can be found. For example, there is an archaeological permanent exhibition in Völs, showcasing numerous finds from the Sciliar area. The farmers' museum in St. Oswald, located in a farm that is around 500 years old, is also very impressive, where interested visitors can learn about the role of craftsmanship in the village. Those who wish can also admire the "Cathedral of the Dolomites" - the church tower of Castelrotto - which is one of the highest church towers in South Tyrol. Furthermore, the Sciliar area also offers numerous walking and hiking trails that lead those seeking relaxation into the charming landscape. The geotrail in Pufels impressively shows how the Dolomites were formed, and the Oachner Höfeweg, which passes by numerous old farms, is also highly recommended.
