Between Eppan and Tramin lies Kaltern, a holiday destination shaped by South Tyrolean wine and Lake Kaltern.
The village of Kaltern is very well known for its wines, as noble drops such as Sauvignon, Cabernet, or Lagrein are produced here. In the region around Kaltern, guests will also find numerous other attractions, such as the South Tyrolean Wine Museum, where the significance of wine is illustrated through countless exhibits. A particularly special experience is a ride on the Mendelbahn, the steepest funicular railway in Europe. Upon reaching Kaltern's local mountain, the Mendel, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Etschtal valley. Furthermore, the Mendel is ideal for mountain hikes of varying difficulties. The reed area at the southern end of Lake Kaltern is also beautifully presented, where more than 100 bird species can be found. The observation tower is perfect for birdwatching, and the nature experience trail by the lake, which was expanded in 2010, is highly recommended.
Romantic Winter Time
In winter, one can get in the Christmas spirit in Kaltern by the lake and stroll through the winding streets. Throughout the town center, visitors will find festive stalls and decorated Christmas trees. Additionally, various concerts and readings are part of the program. Just a few kilometers from the village, winter sports enthusiasts will also find some small ski areas that have a very special charm. These include the Mendel Ruffrè ski area or the Reinswald Sarntal ski area, which shows a wild romantic side in the cold season. The Rittner Horn ski area also promises skiing fun for the whole family, where the youngest guests can enjoy themselves in the ski kindergarten.
