The word "Tschey" comes from the Romansh language and means something like "high valley." Here, on the approximately three-kilometer-long valley floor, there are about 100 cooking huts and hay barns, with each barn belonging to a farmer who stored their harvested hay there. The cooking huts were used – as the name suggests – for cooking and for overnight stays.
Romantic Power Place
A true power place is also the chapel of Maria Schnee, which was established in 2004 through a private initiative. The path to the chapel is suitable for wheelchair users and families with strollers, and the power spot, which is romantically situated among hay barns and meadows, can be reached within 30 minutes.
Highest European Mine
Also worth seeing is the Platzertal mine, where copper, zinc, and lead ores are extracted at an altitude of 2500 to 3000 meters. To secure the mining buildings from decay, the association Bergwerk Platzertal was founded in 2007, and in 2020, the renovation of the mountain houses and the cable car station was completed. Today, the buildings can be visited as part of a longer hike, with a walking time of about six hours to the mine, but the effort is definitely worth it.
Wild Paws Adventure
A very special experience awaits guests in the cold season when musher Michaela Braunhofer invites them to dog sledding. In her sled, pulled by Siberian Huskies, there is room for one adult and up to two children. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and includes an introduction to dog sledding, harnessing the Huskies, and a round trip of 7.5 kilometers. At the end, the dogs can also be fed and petted. More information about this exciting adventure can be found at www.wildpaws.at.
